El Fuerte Mexico

El Fuerte is a colonial Magic Town across El Fuerte Valley, located 52 miles northeast of Los Mochis. The town, founded in 1564 by Don Francisco de Ibarra, was a major trading post for silver miners from the Copper Canyon area. Rich in history, El Fuerte has something for everyone. Here are four things to take in during your visit to this historic Mexican town.

1. Kayaking

Kayaking on the El Fuerte river

If you enjoy kayaking, you’ll want to spend most, if not all, of your day on this adventure. It’s best to either fly in early if you want to kayak on your arrival day, or set aside an entire day and two nights to truly immerse yourself in the area. If you’re a bird lover, there are many endemic birds to the area to check off your watch list, including: Russet-crowned Motmot, Squirrel Cuckoo, Magpie-Jay, Tiger Heron and Military Macaw.

You can also take a Guided River Float Tour if your adventurous spirit is more subdued.

2. Hike to see the petroglyphsPetroglyphs at Cerro de la Masacara

Petroglyphs are rock carvings of pictogram and logogram images. They are essentially engravings in rocks made by prehistoric people. There are interesting petroglyphs at the bottom of Cerro de la Mascara, which you can hike to on any Guided Kayaking Tour or Guided River Float Tour. There is also an upper section of petroglyphs that is accessible by following a trail up the hill. Just let your tour guide know if you’d like to see both.

3. Rent bikes and ride around town

Exploring a city by bike allows you to get around faster (versus walking) and you have more access to areas that my be restricted to vehicles. It’s a great way to take in the culture of the area while getting some exercise!

4. Visit the El Fuerte Musem

Open Tuesday through Sunday, this museum was built to look like the original El Fuerte fort, although not on the original site. It contains exhibits on area history, the indigenous Mayo culture and the Secret Forest.

So there you have it. Another beautiful, quaint, and historic town to explore on your trip to Mexico. If you would like to visit El Fuerte with Amigo Trails, we would love to have you along.
