A Colonial Town, Just An Hour Away
From Los Mochis, And Where Our Trips Begin
El Fuerte, located just 52 miles Northeast of Los Mochis, sits on the El Fuerte River and is a postcard picture of colonial style Mexico. It was founded in 1564 by a Spanish conquistador named Don Francisco de Ibarra. It was first called San Juan Bautista de Carapoa but the name was later changed to El Fuerte after the fort was built in 1610.
El Fuerte is 100 meters above sea level with an average temperature of about 85 degrees and is considered tropical. Because it sits at sea level, this means super hot summers and really comfortable winters.
All our Amigo Trails private trips are designed to start in El Fuerte, as it is the perfect location to enjoy a restful day after a long flight, and a relaxing way to ease into the region before the Copper Canyon portion of our trips begin.
We recommend you fly in early to Los Mochis on your arrival day so that you can enjoy one of the optional, afternoon, guided river float tours down the El Fuerte River. There are many beautiful birds in the area, some endemic, and the calming river float tour is the perfect way to relax.
FYI: Do bring bug spray with you as there are little 'no seems' bugs that bother some people a lot.
